The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Celebrities. The other evening, I was shuffling across the pages of a lifestyle magazine. As I was flipping through the leaves, a pretty face made me go back a couple of pages. She looked familiar, like a celebrity we know.
Curiously, I read between the lines to have my first ‘whoa!’ moment of the year. No it wasn’t a ‘he turned her’, it WAS, in fact, the celebrity! She was ayoung lady, in her mid-late twenties (not so sure now) and quite fit, but she had gone under the knife to carve up the face in the picture.
Suddenly, I felt the gaping question of why some people prefer trusting a man with a knife more than God, being answered. You see, she never really caught my fancy before she went under the knife, but after, unfortunately made me re-track my flipping.
The catch here though, is that she has to make do with the same set of lungs, kidneys and I think a brain as well, but sometimes, that’s a good thing. Much the way of the newest wheels from Henry Ford’s legacy. Meet the Figos.
Implying ‘cool’ in Italian, the Figo does look happy. Happiness equivalent to a sunny spring summer morning, with the paper on your doorstep, and a recent pay cheque and a hot cuppa. Its eyeliner-lined headlamps are something you will love to see after a dreary day at work. A bread and circus car, if you will. It is possibly the only mini in the country that will look great in green.
Figo Car Rear
Following Ford’s global Kinetic design direction pointed by Martin Smith, the Figo comes off as a winsome sibling to Ford’s international hatchback, the exciting Focus. The wheel-arches and skirts give it a muscular stance. At the rear, the lights flank the windscreen like in the Fusion. Although the Figo has clear and crisp lines, I reckon that if the spoiler was a bit more pronounced, the car would’ve looked sportier.
What Ford has done here is take the Fusion, do away with boxy looks and the confusing ride height, add more oomph, and botox the face into a car worthy of a second-look. Safe, but not conservative styling from Ford for its first legitimate B+ segment-er.
Ford Figo Interiors
Now, before I talk of the interior trim, I feel I must forewarn you about the car’s dash. It’s a weird colour. A result of an un-fortuitous encounter between marshmallows and vomit. Sorry, but it IS that distasteful. The only possible advantage I could conjure up is the reduction of dashboard reflection on the windscreen. If this is the cure, I’d rather have the disease. Ford say the colour is ‘thanks’ to something called injection moulding and they add that there is a ‘normal’ dash version available. Small mercies.
Interior trim levels are not exactly bang-up but neither are they unsound. The splash of silver all around looks nice but feels cheap. Circular air-con vents are functionally great. Quality of switch-gear again treads the middle-line. Seats are comfortable with good side support and the fabrics looks like they’ll last the distance and the steering has good feel. With the driver’s seat configured for a reasonably sized driver, all six feet one inch of me could fit in comfortably but it might be a bit cramped for three at the back.
What took me back was the lack of rear power-windows even on the A+ trim (Titanium). This is like vegetable biryani, unacceptable. Boot space is big enough to fit the entire cast of Kyon Ki… Ford has done well to retain the Fusion’s interior space offering.
Ford Figo Engine
Under the hood, you’ll find a choice of two engines. The diesel is the same 1.4-litre, 4-cylinder DuraTorq Mill powering the Ikon, Fiesta and Fusion. The output is fairly unchanged (you can’t say up-ed from 67 bhp) at 68 bhp and torques remain firmly unchanged at a nice 160 Nm. In a diesel, the sweet spot generally is unreachable, but as the case with the DuraTorqs, the power is fathomable at 4,000 revs and the torque at a lower 2,000 rpms.
The petrol is a new 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder DuraTec engine churning out 70 bhp at a rev-happy 6,250 rpm and 102 torques at 4,000 rpm. This engine doesn’t make sense except for a lower asking price. We’ll discuss that a little later on.
The diesel feels nice and familiar. A bit loud on the outside but cabin noise is nicely subdued although a bit of vibrations do percolate. The power is satisfactory, engine is responsive and the gear shifts are exact. The petrol is bit of a let-down. With not enough usable power and fewer torques than its competitors, it is a mere formality of an engine.
The diesel then is the winner. With a tried and tested engine, the diesel is most likely to be a better proposition for the discerning driver/traveler.
Cars from Ford have always caught my fancy. No, not because they look nice – the Escort looked like a squint fish, the Ikon had/has looks that only its mother could like and the Fiesta could never really peek out of its cloak of invisibility. No, I liked them because they drove really well and the Figodoesn’t disappoint. The seating position is excellent. With a clear view of the road, the ergonomics are spot-on.
Figo Car Steering
A good feel of the road reach you through the steering wheel. The horn is sadly a little too loud inside the cabin. Maybe this will help mend those incessant honkers. The handling is precise and the driving feel is quite super.
With the Escort, the Ikon, the Mondeo and the Endeavour, Ford had established a good brand image. Few years later, arrived the Ford Fusion. This car suffered severely from D.I.D, mostly stemming from a marketing mishap. Ford marketers did not know where to fit the car – a MPV, a hatchback, a mini…they were as confused as Bobby Darling’s underwear. Me? I would include it in my garage. Albeit a bit boxy, it comfortably seats five, drove well, had a well powered 1.6 litre 100 bhp petrol heart (the diesel was better value) and a boot that was anything but scant. This car put practicality before anything else and sometimes, that’s a good thing. It’s unfortunate that the masses don’t figure it out and quite frankly, I don’t blame them. What killed the car finally, was the price. This car was priced per a C-Segment-er. This meant it was missing a whole body part, the separate boot.
The Figo is priced very well. A decent version of the car will set you back by INR 3.81 lakh (ex-showroom) for the petrol and Rs 4.72 (ex-) for the diesel. Compared to the sort-of similar priced i10, you get a space fest with the Figo. The Polo versions are again more expensive than the Figo. Good value for money then.
If you are keen about travelling (long or fairly long) in comfort, go for the diesel Figo. It packs a decent punch, has plenty of space and the engine is a proven mill. The petrol is a ho-hum affair. It sure wins the price war but doesn’t win my heart. Go for it if the diesel doesn’t bake your biscuit.
Here is a word for Ford, Get That 1.6-LITRE, 100 BHP DURATEC ENGINE in the FIGO!!

maruthi suzuki kizashi

Maruti Suzuki India Limited is sprucing up to launch a new sedan in India. The new model will be titled "Maruti Kizashi" and is likely to be launched by 2010.

Maruti Suzuki Kizashi India
Maruti Kizashi is still in the concept stage in India. Maruti Suzuki Kizashi was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007 and later at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi in 2008. Maruti Kizashi will be priced at Rs. 10 lakh and therefore will be a premium car with luxury features.

Maruti Kizashi comes with an outstanding aero-dynamic design with front view featuring a completely stylish look. There is a new innovative tapering headlights and classic front design that is unseen so far in Maruti small car models in India. This new upcoming model can rightfully be attributed as a cross-over sports sedan.

Maruti has very recently launched yet another small car model, Maruti Ritz, in India but it is yet to make its impact in the Indian market. Maruti Suzuki India Limited; India's largest car manufacturer that sells nearly every second car in India is contemplating an expansion of its product portfolio; especially in the sedan segment. As of now, Maruti Swift and Swift DZireattribute to a majority of its sales.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi said "My concern is about the quality of our growth. Although we achieved good overall national numbers, the region-wise and model-wise performance was not uniform. We relied mostly on Dzire and Swift to power our growth."

Yamaha SZ Review

December 30, 2010

I take Yamaha India's latest sporty commuter the 153 cc SZ, for a spin..
"Yamaha = Excitement/Performance/Faster Heart Beats"

That’s what Brand Yamaha stands for me and I am sure to the majority of Indian bikers as well. Lets recollect the models which have built Yamaha its image/presence in India
Likes

+ Attractive pricing
+ Good low end performance
+ Comfortable ergonomics

Dislikes

- Doesn't do justice to the Yamaha DNA
    1. RD350 2. RX100 3. YZF R15 4. FZ-16/S
I don’t think anyone with an interest in Indian motorcycles would disagree that no other Yamaha model can find its place in the above list. Each of the above mentioned four models stays true and honest to the brand identity of Yamaha.

i.e. "Yamaha = Excitement/Thrill/Faster Heart Beats"

According to me, any product that Yamaha manages to conjure up for India by following the above formula, will be a successful. Well then, what about the recently launched Yamaha SZ/SZ-X/SZ-R?

I take it's test ride to find out..
Yamaha SZ Review
Foreword: I got to test ride the SZ-X variant, the one with the self start feature but without the Front Disc Brake. The SZ-R (the one with the front disc) variant was there in the showroom too but there wasn't any SZ-R test vehicle. To add to my frustration, the showroom guys did not allow me to take photos of the SZ-R variant, saying that they could be held responsible by the Yamaha top management guys if any issue arises because of the photos..!!

Hello.. haven’t you heard anything about "Free Publicity"..??

Looks"Contemporary good looks, but nothing like we haven't seen"

Good looks can do wonders. Sexy good looks can guarantee admiring second glances, make ones heart skip a beat and might even lead you to think irrationally. Ask any male who has crossed puberty.
The styling of the SZ is definitely draws inspiration from the FZ. The shape of the tank and side panels especially has traces of the FZ in it. But somehow the SZ finally appears more closer to the current 150 cc models in India. It is a decent looking bike, pleasing and modern. But in the end it’s not something which we have not seen before, and that fails to generate the thrill and excitement in 2010-11.

Riding Posture and Ergonomics"Comfortable, slightly sporty"

The riding posture on the SZ is quite comfortable and slightly sporty too. The seat is comfortable and well padded; the seat height is slightly tall for shorter guys. Conservative commuters might not take the absence of a kick lever on the SZ-X and SZ-R kindly. Other omissions (cost cutting?) are the absense of an engine kill switch and a pass flasher.

Ride, Handling & Braking"The suspension is tuned for a comfortable ride rather than for sporty handling"

Unlike the FZ the SZ has been given conventional suspension in the form of dual rear suspension. The suspension has also been set up more to provide a supple ride which somewhat compromises on the handling. Both the front and rear tyres are of TVS make, a tyre brand which is exactly not the favorite among bikers. Nevertheless during the test ride the tyres did not give any nervous moments and provided decent grip.
The braking provided by the front drum brake of the SZ-X is not confidence inspiring. Its highly recommended to opt for the Disc Brake (SZ-R variant instead).

Clutch & Gear Box"Light weight clutch and precise gearbox"

The clutch is delightfully light which makes short work of riding in traffic. The slick shifting gearbox slots the cogs perfectly in place in the universal one down- four up pattern. There are absolutely no issues with the clutch and gearbox.

Engine & performance"Smooth engine tuned for low and mid range performance"

The looks, ergonomics and the ride on the SZ has been set up for effortless and comfortable commuting. Likewise even the 153 cc, FZ derived engine has been tuned to perform like a commuter. The detuned FZ engine makes 12.1 Ps of power and 12.8 Nm of torque, lower than that of the FZ and it shows in the slower throttle response as well.
Unlike the FZ the SZ doesn’t provide the thrill of a quick 0-60 kmph. Also compared to the SZ, the Pulsar 135LS is way more potent in terms of top end performance.

What the SZ does best is let you potter around in traffic without having to change too many gears. Also worth mentioning is that the engine remains reasonably smooth in its performance.

Fuel Efficiency: I couldn’t check the fuel efficiency of the SZ for obvious reasons but with a detuned FZ engine and a slimmer rear tyre the fuel efficiency will be at least around 45-50 kmpl (I am speculating here). According to me, the fuel efficiency of the FZ is its only ‘Achilles Heel’ and hopefully the SZ should better the FZ in this aspect.

Price: The best aspect of the SZ is definitely its price tag.
Rs. 49,000 (Ex-Showroom Delhi) for the SZ (no self start model),

Rs. 52,000 (Ex-Showroom Delhi) for the SZ-X (self start and tank extension) and

Rs. 55,500 (Ex-Showroom Delhi) for the SZ-R model (with Front disc + Self start + Tachometer + different tank extensions)

The SZ-R is still a good around Rs. 8,000 cheaper than the Pulsar 150, the segment leader for the last nearly 10 years. The SZ-R also has almost the same price tag as the Hero Honda Achiever (with Front Disc Brake + Self Start).

But at the same time the SZ-R is a good Rs. 8,000 costlier than the Bajaj Discover 150.

What’s the USP of the Yamaha SZ?

To me the USP of the Yamaha SZ is that it’s a value for money, affordable product. Anyone who is short of cash for a 150 cc and isn’t too kicked about the looks of the Hero Honda Achiever or the Discover 150 has a good option in the Yamaha SZ.

Verdict: The Yamaha SZ definitely is a good package of decent looks, decent performance for commuting in traffic and a comfortable vibe free ride. All this comes at a decent price too. But does the SZ have the Yamaha DNA (Thrill/Excitement/Faster Heart Beat) to set it apart from other bikes/brands?

Hmm.. well.. the SZ is too docile and well mannered for a Yamaha..!!

As any other Mercedes model, the R 350 4MATIC displays the finest workmanship of beautiful materials and loads of new assistance systems have been planted in the car.
Mercedes-Benz says its new R-Class is a car beyond reproach. It is available with a choice in 4 metallic finishes that simply highlight the refined features. The four colour options are chrome black, iridium silver, palladium silver and diamond white bright.

Powertrain & Performance

The Mercedes Benz R Class comes equipped with a 3.5 liter DOHC 24 valve V6 petrol engine. The engine produces a maximum torque of 350 Nm that helps bring immediate power delivery for a wide range of engine speed. The powerful Mercedes engine produces a maximum output of 268 bhp @ 6000 rpm.
The V6 engine featured in the new Mercedes crossover vehicle offers outstanding fuel efficiency. The overall fuel efficiency is 11.7kmpl. This comes courtesy the four variable camshafts which are continuously controlled as needed, so that just the right amount of fuel is called upon for the driving situation in question.
The Mercedes Benz family crossover impresses with its fast acceleration and superb speed. With a top speed of 230 kmph, the R Class can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 8.3 seconds. The engine is paired with an intelligent 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission that does complete justice to the driving conditions in India. The transmission is operated through the DIRECT SELECT lever on the steering column. The seven forward gears allow an ideally adapted engine speed at all times, thus cutting fuel consumption, while shorter shift times and smoother shifts make gear changes easier as well as reducing the noise level.
The Mercedes Benz R Class features a 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system that provides excellent traction as well as enhanced driving stability. Additionally, the chassis and AIRMATIC air suspension offer high levels of comfort as well as impressive agility.

Build & Styling

New Mercedes-Benz R-Class Car - Interior
The new R-Class carries such a noble stance, that it's too hard to explain its grandiosity. The widened radiator grille is more upright. The styled headlamps are focused firmly ahead. Its fine shoulder line trim strips and elegant door handles in chrome are a mark of sophistication. With its second and third row, the generous R-Class has room for everyone and additional space for luggage too. The R-Class is your private jet for the road with ample legroom, armrests and two 8-inch screens. Additionally, there's an individually adjustable air conditioning system in the rear, too.
Optimum visibility and light conditions are ensured thanks to the combination of Bi-Xenon headlamps and new LED daytime driving lights. The daytime driving lights feature two lamps, each with 7 LEDs to improve perception by other road users. The lights sport an innovative, differentiating appearance when switched on. On the whole, the daytime driving lights and front fog lamps ringed in chrome, and the tail light featuring LED and fibre-optic cable technology are not just practical and useful, they accentuate the car's sophisticated look too.
The R 350 4MATIC happens to be a generously dimensioned car blending legendary standards of comfort with high agility, an aspect that not many cars can be proud of. This car flaunts the right proportions, yet does not fail to impress the crowd with dynamism of a level that one wouldn't really expect. The instrument console sports the 3D look and features the white scale background.
The high-quality leather upholstery is available in either black or almond beige. The R-Class offers first-class travel for everybody with the plush individual-seat concept adding to the ride comfort. With its two Executive Chairs, the rear is as inviting as the front. The centre seat can simply be folded down to serve as a comfortable centre armrest. To get to the third row, there's the EASY-ENTRY system. Each of the rear seats too can be folded forward individually. The second row of seats effortlessly accommodate up to three child seats next to each other.
The R-Class' 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive provides impressive traction as well as enhanced directional and driving stability. As 4MATIC is always active, it responds virtually instantaneously in poor weather conditions such as rain. It is assisted by Electronic Stability Program ESP and electronic traction system 4ETS with integral ABS and ASR functions. The chassis and the AIRMATIC air suspension really come into their own road, offering a high level of comfort as well as impressive agility.
The automatic braking pulses keep the car out of danger even while moving off on slippery roads and enhance stability during critical manoeuvres. The Direct-Steer system offers greater control over the steering ratio and reduces the need to steer in wide steering angles such as when parking or on tight bends. The electro-hydraulic power-assisted steering also helps to save fuel.
The AIRMATIC air suspension with adaptive shock absorbers adjusts itself in line with the current road conditions, vehicle load and driving situation. The driver can select either comfort-oriented or sporty settings manually. Or the system will switch to stiffer settings of its own accord, while the level of the car can be altered as required at the touch of a button.
Assistance systems provide additional comfort in the new R-Class. Parking is now child's play, thanks to PARKTRONIC and the reversing camera. It detects and then offers visual signs and acoustic signals if there's enough space available for parking your R-Class.
In the safe driving mode, the car's systems can be activated to prevent an accident. The assistance systems in the R 350 4MATIC can defuse even critical situations. Whether there's the danger of an accident or one can no longer be avoided, the R-Class does everything in its power to provide better protection for the driver and passengers.
The R-Class intelligently activates assistance systems when it senses danger. There is the reversible belt tensioning with the PRE-SAFE positioning function for the front passenger seat together with the optional Memory Package and automatic closing of the open windows and optional sliding sunroof depending on the driving situation and the vehicle equipment.
The R-Class has also been equipped with THERMOTRONIC luxury automatic climate control system, rear climate control, a memory package that stores the driver's seat, steering column and mirror positions, EASY-PACK system and loads of other useful equipment. A sliding sunroof comes as standard. The R-Class' load compartment features luxurious space with a total of up to 2385 litres of load capacity.
Six airbags with two-stage deployment that act based on the projected impact of an accident take safety to new levels. Adding to the safety are sidebags and large windowbags. The crash- responsive NECK-PRO head restraints improve protection for the occupants and help to reduce the risk of whiplash injury.
The Rear Seat Entertainment System comprises a DVD player, two TFT colour displays with a 20.3-cm diagonal on the front head restraints, two sets of wireless headphones, remote control and two Aux-in connections, allowing the rear passengers to watch films or connect a games console during the journey. Both displays can be used independently of one another.
The Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system combines surround sound in Dolby Digital 5.1, a 13-channel DSP sound amplifier, 14 speakers optimized to suit the car interior and a subwoofer. The 3-D stereo sound ensures sheer listening pleasure while the speed-sensitive volume control provides a constant sound impression.

This street-fighter avatar of the Apache RTR 160 has huge front petal disc brakes, upside down forks, a non-faired front, wide tyres and wait for it, a rear mono-shock as the hallmarks of its design. The streetfighter concept has been shown so as to gauge the initial reaction of the Indonesian public towards such a design.

When viewed from side the Velocity 160 looks very similar to the Yamaha FZ series and Honda CB Dazzler. The headlamp of Velocity 160 resembles to the headlight of Bajaj Pulsar 135 Light Sport. But overall thhe Velocity 160 is a winner in terms of design and looks very good from almost all angles. It isexpected that the design of concept will be carried over into the production version of Velocity 160.
Instrument Cluster of TVS Velocity 160 Street Fighter
